Early Oral Hygiene: When to Start Brushing Your Child’s Teeth
Good oral hygiene is a crucial skill to teach your child from an early age. Even before their first tooth emerges, you can begin practicing dental care. Here’s how to get started and continue as they grow.
Starting with Baby’s First Tooth
When you notice the first tooth (usually around 6 months), it’s time to gently brush it. Using a soft-bristled baby toothbrush, apply a tiny rice grain sized amount of toothpaste and gently brush the tooth and gum line. Do this twice a day to keep your baby’s tooth clean and healthy.
Cleaning Baby’s Gums
Even before teeth appear, it’s important to clean your baby’s gums. Shortly after birth, use a damp, clean washcloth or terry cloth finger cot to gently wipe the gums. This helps remove bacteria and prevent future cavities.
Transition to Independent Brushing
Around the ages of 7 to 8, children can start brushing their teeth on their own. Guide them until they can confidently handle the toothbrush and ensure they don’t miss any spots. They must be able to tie their own shoelaces first, as this demonstrates good manual dexterity.
First Dental Appointment
Schedule your child’s first dental appointment around their first birthday. This visit is essential to prevent and address any early signs of tooth decay and to get professional advice on maintaining your child’s oral health.
Remember, early dental care sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles!
