What is Sedation and Sleep Dentistry?

Our team of experienced child specialists offer multiple sedation treatments for your anxious child or special needs patient. We perform in-house Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas), Conscious Sedation (Oral Sedation), General Anesthesia (Sleep Dentistry).

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a fast acting gas that will provide sedative and analgesic effects on children. It will provide a light sedation, enough to reduce anxiety and stress during dental treatment. This great for young children, anxious patients, and patients with dental fears.

Conscious/Oral Sedation

Conscious sedation is a combination of medicines that help your child relax (a sedative) and block pain (an anesthetic) during their dental procedure. The child becomes more relaxed but is still able to respond to parents, or to the dentist, while also possibly feeling more sleepy. Conscious sedation allows them to recover quickly and return to their everyday activities soon after the procedure.

General Anesthesia (Sleep Dentistry)

With General Anesthesia, the patient is brought to a total state of unconsciousness. This type of treatment is more appropriate for kids that have extensive treatment needs, a lack of cooperation, or are too young for other methods of treatment. General anesthesia makes your child’s whole body go to sleep. It will allow the completion of dental treatments without your child feeling any instruments, discomfort or pain, all while having no memory of the procedure. Parents must be aware that there are risks associated with General Anesthesia. This method of sedation will only be provided by a certified and well-trained Dental/Medical Anesthesiologist.
